2014-2015 Program Highlights

Middlesex OM Team Heads to World Finals

Lorton, Virginia-April 18, 2015  Where would you find students of all ages wearing body paint and wacky outfits toting PVC pipe and set designs, making structures of balsa wood that can balance and support as much weight as possible, creating and presenting original performances centered around a technical representation or an ancient architectural structure, or designing and building vehicles that complete a student designed course? Why the Virginia State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament, of course.

On Saturday, April 18th, St. Clare Walker and Middlesex Elementary School students matched wit and whim at South County High School in Lorton, Virginia with students from all areas of the state in a day of problem-solving competition. Middlesex County teams competed in two of the five possible problem categories.  The SCW Experiencing Technical Difficulties, coached by Claire Evans, placed fifth in their division.  SCW team members include: Jaye Griffin, Dean Tennant, Jackson Stamm, Noah Cannon, Peyton Bishop, RuthAnn Key, and Bryan Graulich. The MES Silent Movie, coached by Kathy Ruark, won FIRST place in their division and will advance to the World Finals in East Lansing, Michigan May 20-24, 2015. Team members include: Alexis Alley, Ella Hodges, Chessa Lowery, Wyatt Evans, Gabe Smith, Julia Young, and Kaydence Congleton.

For more than twenty five years, the Odyssey of the Mind has promoted creativity by challenging students of all ages to solve divergent problems working through teamwork.  The premise of founder Dr. Sam Micklus’ problem solving approach to learning is that a group is a more powerful thinking force than an individual.  Middlesex County Schools is proud to offer enrichment opportunities such as Odyssey of the Mind to its many talented and dedicated students.
