Awards & Recognition
Designated in 2010
St. Clare Walker Middle School has been chosen as a winner in the 2010 Schools to Watch Program. The Schools to Watch initiative was started by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform in 1999 to improve education for middle school students in the United States.
St. Clare Walker has received the 2012 Board of Education Excellence Award for the 2nd year in a row. The Board of Education Excellence Award is the second-tier honor in the Virginia Index of Performance program. These schools and divisions have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and have made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board.
Christine Pedersen awarded Economic Education Prize
Christine Pederson, Middlesex High School English teacher, created a lesson that helped her students understand the economics of farming and the food industry. After having her students read “Fast Food
Nation” as an example of expository writing, Pederson engaged them in a simulation she created to show
the relationship between farmers, middlemen and consumers.
For her innovative lesson, Pederson received first place in the annual Excellence in Economic Education
Teacher Awards Program conducted by the Virginia Council on Economic Education.
